Description

The Barnt Green War Memorial is a war memorial designed by the Bromsgrove Guild around 1920. It is set in a brick wall with ashlar dressings.

The memorial features limestone carvings embedded in a red brick wall laid in random bond, topped with an ashlar coping and a wrought iron railing on its south side. The monument is rectangular, with sculptures placed in niches on the south face.

On the south face, there are three sculptures that were previously located in the church gable. The central figure is Christ on the cross in high relief, positioned against a broad stone cross that is flush with the brickwork. Flanking Christ are two smaller stone niches with hoods made of projecting tiles. The left niche contains a sculpture of a soldier in a great coat and battle dress, while the right niche features a sailor holding a rifle. The sculptures are designed to be viewed from below, as they look downwards. At the top of the wall, there are two stepped, projecting courses of bricks supported on tiles, with the uppermost course being a soldier course topped with a concrete coping. Behind a wrought iron fence, there is a curved, tiled platform with three steps at ground level.

On the western flank of the memorial, there are two bronze rectangular plaques. The upper plaque reads "1914+ REMEMBER+1918" with names listed below, and at the bottom, it states "MAY THEY REST IN PEACE." The lower plaque commemorates the fallen from World War II, reading "1939 + 1945," followed by the names of those who served. Additionally, there is a small brass plaque that notes, "THIS WAR MEMORIAL / WAS RELOCATED, RESTORED / AND REDEDICATED / AS PART OF THE REFURBISHMENT OF / ST ANDREW'S CHURCH / NOVEMBER 2001."
