Description

The Church of St Andrew is an Anglican church located on Sandhills Road in Barnt Green, built between 1909 and 1914 by architect A.S. Dixon. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish garden wall bond, featuring blue brick headers and some tile and stone dressings, topped with a Roman tile roof. The church has a nave, apse, and north and south aisles, with an unfinished liturgical west end that was intended to include an additional one and a half bays and a tower at the liturgical northwest corner, reflecting a Byzantine style.

On the exterior, the church features small round arch clerestory windows set between brick pier buttresses that rise above deep eaves. The low north and south aisles are similarly buttressed and include small tile-arched two-light windows with stone central piers and tile relieving arches over a segmental-headed priest's door. There is a quadrant in the southeast angle and a gable above a three-light window to the right. The liturgical east end is marked by a large apse with a semi-conical roof and a small wooden bellcote above. The unfinished liturgical west end displays a tile-hung gable with a carved stone relief of the Crucifix below, flanked by small niches containing soldiers.

Inside, the church has plastered walls and features four-bay arcades with plain round arches and piers. The nave is open to a nine-bay king-post roof with angle struts. An oak post-and-lintel screen with painted stencil decoration has been moved back towards the apse. The fittings include a polygonal pulpit, reading desk, lectern, Communion rail, and a font with a square bowl on a round pilastered stem. There is also an open timber gallery/organ loft, which is a later addition. The stained glass windows were created by Richard Stubington.
