Description

Briarwood is a house dated 1891, designed by J. L. Ball for J. A. Christie. It is built of stretcher bond red brick and features a clay plain tile gabled roof with plain stone kneelers. The house has axial and lateral brick stacks with round arch panels. The plan is H-shaped, with an axial passage connecting the porch at the front left and the staircase at the front right.

The exterior has two storeys and an attic, with an almost symmetrical northeast front that includes flanking projecting gables. These gables extend over out-shuts in the inner angles, with the right side containing the staircase and the left side featuring the porch, which has a recessed pilastered doorcase and a tablet above inscribed 'Briar Wood MDCCCXCI'. At the center, there are a pair of small gables for the attic. The central area has 2-light casements with leaded panes, while the left and right sides have sashes with glazing bars and gauged brick flat arches. The symmetrical southwest garden front mirrors this design, featuring tall narrow sashes, flanking projecting gables, and a canted two-storey bay at the center with a pair of small gables above. The interior has been altered.
