Description

This barn, located 25 metres northwest of Wellinditch Farmhouse, dates from the 17th to early 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles and some areas covered in corrugated iron. The barn consists of seven bays oriented approximately east-west, featuring a midstrey to the south. There is a lean-to extension to the east of the midstrey, creating a catslide roof. To the west, there is a 19th-century four-bay extension that includes another midstrey and a catslide roof to the east of it. Between the two midstreys, there is a lean-to extension that is roofed with red clay 'Roman' tiles, while a further lean-to extension to the west of the western midstrey is covered with corrugated iron. The roofs of both midstreys and their catslides are made of handmade red clay tiles. The main roof is partially tiled but has been repaired with red clay pantiles and corrugated iron; the four-bay extension is entirely roofed with corrugated iron. The barn features a plinth of red brick in English bond, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, arched braces to the straight tiebeams (some of which have been replaced by bolted knees), and primary straight bracing. It has a gambrel roof supported by queen struts, side purlins, and collars in the upper pitch.
