Description
This barn, located 25 metres southwest of Withies Green Farmhouse, dates from around 1600 and was altered in the 19th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. The barn has five bays that are aligned approximately northwest to southeast, featuring a midstrey on the northeast side. There is a lean-to extension at the northwest end, which is roofed with red clay pantiles. The main roof is hipped at both ends, while the midstrey has a gabled roof.
The structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding, and girts, with bolted knees that have replaced the original arched braces to the tiebeams. The wallplates show wattle grooves, and there are wattle fixings in the sides of the studs, although the wattle and daub infill has been removed. The southeast end has been built up to girt level using red brick. The northwest bays have been altered with primary straight bracing. The roof of the main range was rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century, and laths for the former thatch on the midstrey have been replaced by corrugated asbestos.
