Description

Tippett's Wade is a cottage dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with red plain tiles. The building has two bays facing south, with the gable end facing the street. There is an internal stack at the left end and an external stack at the right end. A 19th or 20th-century extension creates a catslide roof at the rear. The cottage is two storeys tall.

On the ground floor, there is one 19th-century sash window and two 20th-century sash windows, each with 12 lights. The first floor features two 18th-century sash windows, also with 12 lights, made of crown seconds glass. The entrance has a plain boarded door.

Inside, the larger left bay contains a chamfered axial beam, with plain joists of horizontal section joined to it using soffit tenons with diminished haunches, and jowled posts. This bay was originally part of a single-storey structure with an attic, which was raised by approximately 1.5 metres in the 18th century. The smaller right bay has plain joists of vertical section and full-height unjowled posts. The left bay is the remaining part of a 16th-century house that once extended further to the left, which was raised and extended to the right as much as the site allowed in the 18th century. There is a 20th-century grate in the internal stack.
