Description

This is a house, now divided into two cottages, located on Coggeshall Road in Bradwell. It dates from around 1600 and was altered in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and has been plastered with a design intended to resemble exposed timber framing; the roof is covered with handmade red clay tiles, some of which are fishscale shaped on the front slope. There is a central chimney and a full-width, single-storey extension to the rear, built of red brick and slate.

The house has two storeys and originally faced south with three bays. It features three 19th-century latticed wooden casement windows on each floor. There are two plain boarded doors, each protected by a 19th-century gabled canopy with cusped bargeboards. A 19th-century central gable has cusped bargeboards, a finial, and a board inscribed 'OSO 1869', referencing Onley Savill Onley, formerly Hervey, of Stisted Hall. Four grouped octagonal shafts are also present.

On the right return (number 113), original windows with three ovolo mullions can be found on each floor; the lower window also has four diamond saddle bars, although the glazing is modern. Inside number 113, there is a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, plain vertically sectioned joists, and some original framing visible. Number 114, on the left, has a richly moulded axial beam with carved foliate stops, horizontally sectioned moulded joists, and the original mantel beam. Jowled posts are throughout the building. The roof has not been inspected. A fourth bay to the left may have been removed during a renovation in 1869 for Onley Savill Onley of Stisted.
