Description
Ruffles is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with an extension added in the 18th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The building has two bays facing northwest, featuring a central stack, and was extended to the left by one bay in the 18th century, which includes an external stack at the end. The cottage is one storey high with attics, and has three 20th-century casement windows, along with two additional casements in slated lean-to dormers. The entrance features a 20th-century plain door with three small lights at the top and a simple canopy. Inside, there is primary straight bracing with heavy studding. In the left bay, there is a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, while the middle bay has a chamfered axial beam with plain joists of vertical section. A large wood-burning hearth faces to the left and has been repointed and partly re-bricked in the 20th century. On the upper floor at the left end of the original cottage, there is an unglazed window with three diamond mullions, and the tiebeam has been severed to create a doorway.
