Description
This barn, located 30 metres south-west of Aylett's Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century and has undergone later alterations. It is timber framed, weatherboarded, and has a roof made of corrugated iron. The structure consists of three bays with a midstrey on the northeast side. There is a one-bay extension to the northwest and a shorter extension to the southeast, along with a catslide extension in the eastern angle. At the northern corner, it connects to a 19th-century cartlodge made of brick and flint, which is roofed with red clay pantiles, as well as other farm buildings that are not of special interest. The barn features jowled posts, thin curved bracing that is trenched to the inside of the studs, and some arched braces to the tiebeams, along with some bolted knees. The northeast wall to the southeast of the midstrey retains original wattle and daub infill. The roof was rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century and raised above its original level on the southwest pitch. This barn is included for its group value.
