Description

The barn at Copyhold Farm, located on the southeast side of the farmyard, is likely from the late 16th century, with weatherboarding and alterations added in the 18th century, and further changes made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with wattle and daub infill that has been replaced by weatherboard cladding on a brick plinth, topped with a plain tile roof. The structure consists of three bays with an added central midstray.

On the yard elevation, there is a gabled midstray with a double door on either side. The roof slopes down as a catslide on the left, covering a two-bay open-fronted shelter, and on the right, it extends over a 19th-century brick outshut. The rear of the barn has a midstray with a hipped roof, and there is a corrugated iron lean-to on the left, which is not of special interest.

Inside, the barn features jowelled wall posts with short straight braces connecting to the wall plates and tie-beams. The roof structure includes collared queen-post trusses, clasped purlins, old rafters, and a square-section ridge-piece. Holes in the soffits of the wall-framing timbers indicate where former staves from the wattle and daub infill were located.
