Description
Aylett's Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house faces southeast and features an axial stack near the right end. There is a full-length catslide extension at the rear, which has a 20th-century internal stack on the left side. An early 19th-century wing extends forward at the right end, featuring an external stack at the gable end and a partly rendered brick catslide extension to the left.
The house is two storeys high. The front elevation of the original range has one 19th-century horizontal sash window with 24 lights and one early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights on the ground floor. On the first floor, there is one casement window from the 19th or 20th century and one 18th-century three-light casement window with rectangular leading, along with an inserted 19th-century wooden casement. A flush four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, is located in a lean-to porch at the southeast angle.
On the northeast elevation, there is one 20th-century casement window and one mid-19th-century sash window with long vertical panes and marginal lights made of handmade glass on the ground floor. The first floor features two mid-19th-century sashes with six lights and one with four lights, all with handmade glass. A central five-panel door, with the top three panels glazed, is topped by a mid-19th-century moulded flat canopy on scrolled brackets, with two stone steps leading up to it.
The main block showcases good quality timber framing, and the early 19th-century staircase inside has slender straight balusters and a narrow handrail that terminates in a spiral at the newel.
