Description
This barn, located 40 metres southeast of Ashes Farmhouse, dates from around 1700. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. The structure consists of three bays aligned northeast to southwest, featuring an original midstrey to the northwest. There are lean-to extensions in the northern angle and to the southeast. The lower half of the walls is covered with much tarred original hardwood weatherboarding, while the upper half is clad with softwood, which has replaced the original wattle and daub infill. The main roof and the midstrey roof are both half-hipped. The barn has a high-quality jointed and pegged frame, with primary straight bracing and bolted knees to the tiebeams, which are continuous with the wallplates of the midstrey. The roof features joggled butt-purlins. The original great doors now face into an adjacent 20th-century building, and there are some areas of re-used timber used as studding and braces, along with small sections of original infill.
