Description

Wellinditch Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with some areas of cement-rendering and timber framing covered by weatherboarding. The roof is made of handmade red clay tiles and the building has a rectangular plan facing south. It features an axial stack near the right end and a 20th-century external stack on the left, with the right end reduced to a lean-to roof. The house has two storeys and a three-window range of 20th-century casements, along with a 20th-century door set in a gabled porch.

On the rear elevation, there are four 20th-century casements on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The brick walls are notably high and thick, fully plastered on the inside except for the left gable, and the windows are set back in deep reveals. Small clasping buttresses are present at the two left corners, and a string course runs along the left half of the front elevation, continuing around the left return, all rendered over. The right gable is timber framed and weatherboarded. Inside, there are chamfered transverse and axial beams with lamb's tongue stops at both storeys, and the joists are plastered to the soffits. A large wood-burning hearth faces to the left and has been altered in the 20th century. The butt-purlin roof has been reinforced after sustaining war damage. Historical references include a rental from around 1616 mentioning 'Wellinditche with a newly built house, 14 acres and appurtenances,' and a sale catalogue from 1819 describing 'a roomy brick built farmhouse.'
