Description

The Old Rectory is a house dating from around 1800, constructed of gault brick in Flemish bond, mostly painted, and topped with interlocking concrete tiles. It has a square plan that faces east and features two internal stacks on the left side and two on the right return. To the right, there is an original single-storey service wing with a low-pitched hipped slate roof. Behind this wing, there is a later 19th-century single-storey extension with a gabled slate roof, as well as a 20th-century single-storey extension with a flat roof. To the left, there is an early 19th-century two-storey extension with a pyramidal roof of low pitch.

The main building stands two storeys high and has a three-window range of original sashes with 12 lights, each with flat brick arches. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a blocked overlight, and both the door and the ground-floor windows are set within semi-circular arches. The right wing contains two sashes from the 19th or 20th century, while the left extension has one original sash of 8 lights on each floor. The rear elevation of the main building includes a ground-floor C20 French window, one original sash of 12 lights, and one C20 replacement, along with two original sashes of 12 lights and one C20 replacement on the first floor, all with flat brick arches.

Historical records from 1818 describe the house as 'bricked and slated' and note the presence of a garden to the west, a lawn to the south, and a yard with various ancillary buildings to the north, which are no longer present as of July 1985. The property originally included 34 acres of arable land, according to the Essex Record Office.
