Description

Mill Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is timber-framed, with weatherboarding and plaster, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It has three bays facing southwest, with a central chimney stack forming a lobby entrance. A single-storey lean-to extension from the 18th or 19th century extends to the rear of the left end, creating a catslide roofline, and incorporates a 20th-century external chimney stack. A two-storey extension from the late 19th century extends to the rear of the right end, forming a short parallel range. A two-storey, flat-roofed rear extension sits between these two extensions. The front of the house has a two-window arrangement of 20th-century sash windows. The front door is a plain boarded door within a central gabled porch, dating from the 18th or 19th century. The front elevation and the left return are weatherboarded, while the remainder of the exterior is plastered. Inside, there are two large wood-burning hearths. The interior features transverse beams and joists with plastered soffits. The cottage was formerly known as Black Cottage and is not contemporary with a mill.
