Description

Edwins Hall is the remaining part of a much larger late 16th century moated house, believed to have been built by Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, where his wife lived after his death. There is a notable memorial to her in the church of St Mary. The house is constructed of red brick with black brick diapering. The original structure may have been designed around a courtyard, and the surviving sections include the Hall and a small west wing, which has been significantly altered.

The main block is three storeys high and features a later parapet. The front has three mullioned and transomed windows with three lights on the second storey, a two-storey bay window with five lights, and another window with three lights. All windows have stone mullions and transoms. On the east side of the west wing, partially obscuring the main block, is a two-storey porch with an original stone four-centred outer archway and sunk spandrels. The wing has a small gable on the south side and a modern replica of the two-storey bay from the main block. A small wing extends further west. There are additional original mullioned windows. The roofs are tiled, and there is an original chimney stack at the rear with five shafts, the middle one set diagonally.

Inside, there is some original panelling, a panelled overmantel, and several original stone fireplaces. Most of the moat remains, along with parts of an outer moat.
