Description
This barn, located 20 metres south-west of Hay Green Farmhouse, dates back to the 17th century and has been extended in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles and red clay pantiles. The barn consists of five bays arranged east to west, with an entrance on the east side. There is an 18th or 19th century lean-to extension on the south side, which is roofed with pantiles, and a 20th century lean-to extension on the north side, which has a slate roof. The main roof is hipped and covered with plain tiles.
Inside, the barn features unjowled posts, curved primary bracing, light studding, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, straight tie-beams, and a joggled butt-purlin roof with raking struts. The north wall is made of laths and daub and is enclosed by the lean-to. There is an inserted first floor made of softwood, indicating that the barn was likely not originally floored. Historical maps from 1810 and 1832 show the barn's presence in the area.
