Description

1 and 2 Little Jessops are a pair of attached cottages built in the early 19th century, with extensions added in the late 19th century. The cottages are timber-framed, weatherboarded, and plastered, with roofs made of handmade red clay tiles. They have a rectangular plan facing approximately north and feature a central stack.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a full-length two-storey lean-to extension at the rear, which is roofed with corrugated iron. There are two 19th-century external stacks located at the back of this extension. Each cottage has a small 20th-century conservatory at the rear, positioned between the stacks, though they differ in design. No. 1, on the left, has a two-window range of original sashes with 6:6 lights and an original plain door with a narrow canopy supported by simple profiled brackets. No. 2, on the right, features three similar windows, but the upper left sash has been replaced by a casement. It has a 20th-century half-glazed door with a similar canopy. A painted brick plinth, approximately 0.7 meters high, surrounds the cottages. The side elevations are plastered, while the remainder is weatherboarded. The roof is hipped. No. 1 has an original horizontal sash with 6:6 lights on the ground floor of the left elevation, while the corresponding window in the right elevation of No. 2 appears to have been altered.

Inside, No. 2 has a 17th-century moulded three-plank ledged oak door that was introduced between two ground-floor rooms, likely added when the rear extension was constructed. There are 20th-century grates. The building is depicted on the tithe map from 1846. Its character is defined by the simplicity of the original windows and door, along with the weatherboarded and tiled surfaces.
