Description

The Barge is a house dating from the 17th century, and possibly earlier. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building has three bays facing northwest, featuring an axial stack to the left of the middle bay and an 18th-century external stack at the right end. There is a one-bay wing at the rear of the middle bay, along with outshuts on each side, creating a rectangular plan. The house has three 20th-century and three 19th-century casements in gabled dormers. A 20th-century half-glazed door is accompanied by a 19th-century canopy supported by simple brackets. The gambrel roof is half-hipped at the left end, with two catslides to the rear. The rear elevation includes two 19th-century casements, and the external stack features tumbled courses in the shoulders.

Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops visible only in the left bay, and no other framing is exposed. A wood-burning hearth faces to the right, with jambs measuring 0.23 meters, all plastered. There are 20th-century grates to the left and at the right end. A four-plank ledged pine door leading to the stair dates from the 18th century or earlier. This house is situated in a visually significant location at the east end of The Green, and its weatherboarded and tiled surfaces help maintain a village character that has been lost in some nearby listed houses due to inappropriate modernisation. Any future window replacements should aim to preserve this character.
