Description

The Blackmore Memorial Cross is a war memorial dating to the early 20th century, prominently situated on the north-west corner of The Green. The memorial is approximately 4 metres tall and constructed from granite. It features a plain Latin cross set upon a hexagonal column, which itself rests on a stepped base rising from a hexagonal plinth. The plinth is raised on two hexagonal steps. Inscriptions are incised and enamelled. The front face of the plinth bears the inscription "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (21 NAMES)." Further inscriptions on the plinth's side faces read, "THE FOLLOWING CONNECTED/ WITH BLACKMORE ALSO/ SERVED IN HIS MAJESTY’S/ FORCES." The plinth contains the names of a further 81 individuals who served and returned. An inscription on the front face of the upper step reads "THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE." The memorial is set within a small area paved with granite setts, which are interspersed with flower beds. The area is enclosed on three sides by a chain suspended from seven granite bollards, and is bordered by a square path of granite setts.
