Description
Cistern house located in the garden of Orchard House, built in 1587 and rebuilt in 1805. It is constructed of red header-bond brick and features a Roman cement-rendered dome. The structure is circular with a narrow entrance door that encloses a water cistern. Above the door, there is a stone lintel inscribed with 'REBUILT BY SUBSCRIPTION 1805' in Roman letters. This building is a remnant of the public water supply established by Thomas Cannock in 1587. The cistern is supplied by a spring to the south, with water directed through a lead pipe to a pump in Cromwell Hill. Additionally, the cistern has an overflow that leads into an adjacent artificial pond and another overflow pipe that connects to the river below.
