House. 1906. Timber-framed with black weather-boarding and hipped corrugated-zinc roof with wide roof overhang. Continuously glazed clerestorey with further hipped zinc roof. EXTERIOR: single storey with basement under north-east (front) elevation which is perched over the bank of the so-called Saxon Burgh. Front elevation has flight of open timber steps up to front door, which has pilasters, possibly reused. Many irregularly spaced casement windows, each with square top hung ventilator lights over. A window on north-east corner of front is V-canted under wide eaves. Rear garden elevation has wide door opening with pilasters and 3 folding panelled hardwood leaves. INTERIOR: large central 'living hall' with panelled walls and low cantilevered balcony on 2 sides giving access to cupboards in roof space. Hall has grand and elaborate fireplace in embossed steel with inverted pyramidal brackets and pierced shelves, of an advanced Arts and Crafts style. A variety of other fire surrounds including, in a front room, stained timber with double mantel-shelf, cupboard with tiny glazed panes, glazed coloured tiles in flanks and brass smoke deflector. HISTORY: built by local ironmonger in 'Colonial Style' to please wife from New Zealand.
