Description
37 Beeleigh Road is a house built in 1906. It features a timber frame with black weather-boarding and a hipped corrugated-zinc roof that has a wide overhang. The building includes a continuously glazed clerestorey topped with another hipped zinc roof.
The house is single-storey with a basement beneath the front elevation, which is situated on a bank overlooking the Saxon Burgh. The front has a flight of open timber steps leading to the front door, which is flanked by pilasters that may be reused. There are many irregularly spaced casement windows, each with square top-hung ventilator lights above. A window at the northeast corner of the front is V-canted beneath the wide eaves. The rear garden elevation features a wide door opening with pilasters and three folding panelled hardwood leaves.
Inside, there is a large central 'living hall' with panelled walls and a low cantilevered balcony on two sides that provides access to cupboards in the roof space. The hall boasts a grand and elaborate fireplace made of embossed steel, featuring inverted pyramidal brackets and pierced shelves, reflecting an advanced Arts and Crafts style. Other fire surrounds include a stained timber one in a front room, which has a double mantel-shelf, a cupboard with tiny glazed panes, glazed coloured tiles on the sides, and a brass smoke deflector.
The house was built by a local ironmonger in a 'Colonial Style' to please his wife from New Zealand.
