Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the mid-19th century, situated on London Road in Maldon. The houses are constructed of cream Gault brick with stucco dressings and brick quoins, and have a slate roof topped with a large ridgeline stack featuring brick recessed panels. The symmetrical front elevation has a four-window range, with projecting central elements. Each recessed portion has a sash window with a stucco surround and a central vertical glazing bar, overlooking a slightly projecting Tuscan porch with a pierced balustrade. The porches have recessed doors with two large semicircular-headed moulded panels. Above the porches, on the first floor, are two sash windows with iron ventilator panels. The ground floor features two rectangular bay windows with Tuscan piers, margin-glazed tripartite windows, and pierced balustrades. The exposed north-west flank shows two sash windows and a central blind recess, alongside a flat-roofed garage on the south-east flank. To the rear of each house is a lower, two-storey contemporary service block that steps forwards to offer a service entrance on the ground floor, above which is a sash window. The interior was not inspected. The group value of the houses lies in their cohesive design and contribution to the streetscape.
