Description

The Maldon County Court, built in 1858, is a grey Gault brick building with ashlar stone dressings and roofs hidden behind parapets. It is a large building composed of a prominent single-storey front range and a taller block to the rear.

The symmetrical front façade has seven bays, with the end bays projecting forward. A stone dentil cornice is supported by console brackets, and a central stone panel displays the Royal Arms above a stone inscription reading ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ in Egyptian lettering. The five central bays feature semicircular-headed double-hung sash windows recessed within semicircular arches. Each arch has a stone keystone, and a continuous moulded stone sill with a raised brick apron panel sits below. The projecting end bays have brick rustication and paired entrance doors leading to flights of three stone steps. Above, a continuous stone entablature supports a semicircular window with a rubbed brick arch, which expands to meet tall brick keystones. A tall stone-crowned stack is present on the front range.

A contemporary brick and stone frontage wall with saddleback coping is linked by low walls to two gate piers. The general design is similar to that of the courthouse in Braintree, Essex. The interior of the County Court has not been inspected.
