Description
The Forge is a cottage that was formerly a forge, dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, featuring 20th-century pargeting, and has a half-hipped plain tile roof with a central ridgeline stack.
The building is two storeys high and has a two-window range, with a 20th-century flat-roofed extension at the rear. The front elevation includes two-light asymmetrical casement windows on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is a central 19th-century doorcase with a hood supported by consoles, leading to a six-panel 19th-century door. Flanking the door are shallow sash windows with margin glazing.
Inside, the structure has equal bays of hardwood framing, but the bridging joists are offset, creating three unequal bays with a central stack. One reused bridging joist features quadrant-moulded chamfers, and each room has a fireplace with timber mantel beams. Major posts are present on each floor, located in the center of each flank wall. The posts are unjowled, and the roof structure includes collar and side purlins. Notably, the forge once extended around the north-west corner of the house.
