Description

West Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with additions made in the 20th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped by a gabled plain tile roof. The cottage features a tall external chimney stack on the southeast side, with a similar stack now breaking through the ridge due to a 20th-century extension.

The building is single storey with an attic and has a three-window range. There is a pantile-roofed rear lean-to and a 20th-century car port on the southeast side, which has a black weatherboarded gable. The front of the cottage includes three gabled dormers, each fitted with 20th-century two-light casement windows, along with one roof light. The ground floor has a projecting porch with a plain tile lean-to roof, featuring a 20th-century boarded door flanked by sidelights. On either side of the porch are 16-pane sash windows with moulded surrounds. The 20th-century lateral extension includes one of the dormer windows and a garage door opening with a cambered arch. At the rear, there is a two-storey extension into the garden, with its roofline visible above the original ridge.

Inside, the cottage showcases good quality timber framing with three equal bays and lambs-tongue-stopped bridging joists. The central two posts on each wall are unjowled, and tie beams form an A-frame roof. Some timber has been reused, and the roof is largely supported by good reused rafters, some of which are thickened towards the tops. There are two corner cupboards: one small cupboard with serpentine shelves and a larger cupboard that has been sourced from elsewhere in the county.
