Description
Cistern House, located 50 metres north-east of Ingatestone Hall, is a structure from the early 19th century or possibly earlier. It is built from red brick in English bond and features a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building is circular in shape and has a door on the north side, along with slatted gabled dormers on the east and west sides. The plain boarded door is set within a slatted gable. The conical roof is topped with an earthenware garden cloche at the apex.
Inside, the roof structure is made of oak and consists of eight panels, each featuring a curved butt-purlin. There are two tenoned rafters above each purlin and four tenoned rafters below each. Additionally, three empty mortices can be found in each alternate purlin in the four panels that have gables. A collar is tenoned and pegged between two opposite principal rafters. The cistern itself is approximately 1.5 metres deep. The carpentry is of high quality, making this a rare example of its type.
