Description
The garden wall north and east of Ingatestone Hall is a structure with origins dating back to the 16th century, with modifications made in the 18th century, and further rebuilding occurring in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in both English and Flemish bond styles. The wall begins approximately 50 meters north of the northern wing of Ingatestone Hall and extends 167 meters to the east, then 70 meters south. The north-south section of the wall is about 1.5 meters high with 16th century brickwork, which was raised to approximately 2.5 meters in the 18th or early 19th century. This section ends at a square pier featuring a moulded stone base and cap. To the north and west, the wall has undergone alterations and rebuilding in several sections, but one length remains similar to the original north-south section. The wall is documented in a plan from 1566 and in a detailed map created by John Walkers and his son in 1605.
