Description

This barn, located 40 metres south-east of The Old Farmhouse at Renter's Farm, has origins dating back to the early 14th century, with most of its structure from the 16th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated iron. The barn consists of six bays running from north-north-east to south-south-west, featuring two large midstreys on the west-north-west side and two smaller midstreys on the east-south-east side. There are lean-to extensions on both long sides. Originally, the barn had aisles, but it was rebuilt in the 16th century without them. Notable architectural features include jowled posts, cambered tiebeams, and wide curved braces supporting the former arcade plates. Curved tension braces are set inside heavy studding, and arched braces to the tiebeams have been replaced with bolted knees. One scarf joint in the west-north-west arcade plate is splayed and undersquinted, while others are concealed by repair timber. The roof has clasped purlins and was formerly tiled. The Old Farmhouse mentioned in the address refers to the former Renter's Farmhouse, which has historical significance as Renter's Farm held the rectorial tithes at least since 1528.
