Description

Gate Farmhouse is a house that mainly dates from the 17th century, with a fragment of a late medieval house and a 19th-century extension. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The structure includes one bay of a medieval hall house facing north, which used to extend to the east, and a 19th-century red brick extension at the rear with an end stack. To the east of the medieval bay is an 18th-century three-bay house that steps slightly forward, featuring a central stack that forms a lobby entrance, creating an L-plan layout. The building has two storeys and a two-window range of mid-19th-century sashes with marginal lights, along with a central flush four-panel door. The right side of the medieval bay is faced with 19th-century red brick. The medieval bay is lower than the main block and has a more steeply pitched roof, which has been rebuilt in softwood. It features jowled posts, and at the junction between the two parts, there is a fragmentary crownpost truss, with the plain crownpost heavily smoke-blackened on the left side, indicating that the current 17th-century building occupies the site of the medieval hall. Inside the main building, there is one chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, while the other is boxed in. The large wood-burning hearths have been reduced for 20th-century grates. The roof features clasped purlins and re-used smoke-blackened rafters from the medieval hall.
