Description

The walls and turrets located to the northwest, west, and southwest of Beckingham Hall were constructed between 1543 and 1546. They are made of red and blue bricks arranged in an irregular bond. Starting from a point 30 meters northwest of Beckingham Hall, the wall extends 30 meters to the west-southwest, then 40 meters to the south-southeast, which includes a gatehouse that is listed separately. The wall continues for another 37 meters to the west-northwest, connecting to the southwest corner of Beckingham Hall.

At the southwest corner, there is a turret that forms one side of a former arched gateway, although the arch is missing. Another turret, located 4 meters to the southeast, forms the opposite side of the gateway, and the wall continues one meter southeast to meet a 19th-century agricultural building. There is also a turret at the west corner. The wall stands approximately 2.5 meters high, with a chamfered plinth that is 0.5 meters wide and a main part that is 0.32 meters wide. A dogtooth course on each side supports projecting courses that are 0.55 meters wide, and inclined bricks create a steep V-coping, finished with tiles.

About 14 meters east-northeast of the west turret, the wall steps down 5 courses to adapt to the site's gradient, featuring a truncated corbelled pinnacle at this point, which is mirrored in the southeast length. A diaper pattern made of blue flared headers runs along the full length of the inside of the wall and the outside of the southwest length, interrupted by a blocked wicket located immediately northwest of the gatehouse. The turret at the west angle is round and hollow, featuring a doorway with a 4-centred head to the southeast. It rises above the wall, adorned with a dogtooth course and projecting courses leading to a steep pinnacle. The turrets at the south gateway have doorways facing north and northeast, respectively, each with 4-centred heads, dogtooth courses, projecting courses, and tapering crenellated parapets. These structures were built for Stephen Beckingham and are depicted in relation to the larger house on an estate map from 1637 by Samuel Cosin.
