Description
This is an aisled barn dating from the early 14th century, located approximately 20 metres west of Tilegate Farmhouse. It is timber framed, weatherboarded, and has a roof covered with red clay pantiles. The barn was originally three bays long and aligned roughly north-south. An additional midstrey was added to the east, along with one extra bay to the north, though the dates of these additions are uncertain.
The barn features jowled arcade posts and wide-section arched braces connecting to the arcade plates and straight tiebeams. There are passing braces that are tenoned to the tiebeams, with some also tenoned to the wallposts, while others are truncated. The splayed scarfs have undersquinted butts and eight face-pegs in the arcade plates, which were later reinforced by two forelocks in each, using the original peg-holes. One section of the western wallplate is original and has a similar scarf, while the remainder has been renewed. There is also some brickwork in the eastern wall to the north of the midstrey. The roof has been rebuilt with queen struts, although the date of this work is uncertain, likely being from the 18th century or later.
