Description
White's Farmhouse is a 17th-century lobby-entrance house that has been altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of four bays aligned approximately east-west, with a southern aspect. There is an internal chimney stack located in the second bay from the west, against the north wall, which creates a lobby for the entrance and a winding stair.
At the east end, there is a two-storey extension with a modern roof from the 20th century, and at the west end, there is a single-storey extension that includes both 18th and 20th-century elements. The farmhouse has two storeys with attics. The entrance features a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, and is topped by a shallow pedimented hood from the early 19th century. Each floor has three 20th-century casement windows, and there are grouped diagonal chimney shafts.
Inside, there are plain-chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops above the ground floor and first-floor rooms on either side of the stack, along with some original floorboards. Evidence of a former bread oven is found to the south of the stack, which has been demolished. The mantel beam to the east of the stack on the ground floor has been reduced in depth. Although the winding stair to the first floor has been removed, it remains from the first floor to the attic. The west attic is lit by a gable window, while the east attic is unlit but fully floored with original rebated boards.
