Description

Dowsetts is a hall house dating from the 16th century, with extensions added in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with plastering and a thatched roof. The building consists of two bays aligned approximately north-south, with an inserted chimney stack at the south end, primarily made of 20th-century brickwork. A floor was added in the hall, and one bay was extended to the south in the 17th century. There is a lean-to extension at the rear from the 19th century, which has a catslide roof, as well as lean-to extensions to the north and south, both roofed with red clay pantiles from the 19th century. A 20th-century extension is located to the southwest.

On the east elevation, there is a halved door at the front of a tiled gabled porch, along with five casement windows, all from the 20th century, and two additional windows in gabled dormers. Some of the framing is exposed internally, featuring jowled posts and a central tiebeam that has been severed. The east wallplate shows an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint, and the roof is a clasped purlin type with straight wind bracing, which is lightly smoke-blackened. The inserted floor includes an axial beam with unchamfered joists of vertical section supported on clamps. An indenture in the owner's possession documents a bargain and sale of the property to Richard Dowsett in 1688, which is the origin of the name.
