Description

The building is a detached kitchen, now used as a garage, located approximately 10 metres northwest of Hancocks. It dates back to the 16th century and features a render over a timber frame with a gabled old tile roof. The structure is one storey high and consists of three bays. There are two sets of 20th-century double doors on the exterior.

Inside, the kitchen showcases three bays of high-quality timber framing with internal wall bracing. It has jowled posts that are braced to tie beams, supporting a clasped purlin roof with curved wind braces. The end bay is floored, while the two central bays were originally open to the roof and show significant soot-blackening along with steeply-raking braces to the central tie beam.

There are substantial remains of diamond-mullioned windows and the original entrance door, along with a replacement moulded window in the south gable. The soot patterns and the arrangement of openings suggest the presence of some form of fire hood, which is off-centre in one bay. This building is a remarkably complete example of a "medieval type" detached kitchen, associated with a late medieval hall house known as Hancocks.
