Description

This building comprises a late 16th or early 17th century house and shop, situated partially in Epping Road, Roudon. It is constructed with a timber frame and clad in painted brick, topped with red plain tile roofs. The building is two storeys high, with cellars, and has an L-shaped, double-range plan. The eastern elevation, facing Epping Road, has three bays. It features a three-window range of 19th-century vertical sliding sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor windows are 19th and 20th century replacements, all with segmental heads. A string course runs along the facade. A pedimented doorcase from the 18th century, with pilasters, panelled reveals, and a half-glazed four-panel door, provides entrance. A semi-octagonal corner block, dated to the 19th century, rises to a semi-octagonal hipped roof and incorporates a 19th-century shop front with a painted fascia and consoles. The shop front extends across number 3, which has been rebuilt to the rear with a flat roof in the 20th century. Internally, number 1 retains original exposed timber framing on the first floor, including jowled posts, along with some 18th-century doors.
