Description
Wivenhoe Lodge is a 16th-century house that was timber framed and later encased in red brick during the 19th century. The building features a date of 1836 on the front and 1870 on the west gable. Its complex plan includes a long range to the east with a gabled wing on the south, which serves as the front elevation. The roofs are ridged, gabled, and covered with peg tiles, and there is a dentilled brick eaves cornice.
On the east gable of the south wing, there is a small paned sash window under a segmental arch on the first storey, and a large paned pair of sashes under a straight arch on the ground storey. The long range has a neo-Jacobean porch that is rendered, with a semi-hexagonal bay window on the left and a blocked and painted sash window on the right. The first storey features two pairs of hornless small paned sashes.
Inside the main range, the original timber frame is intact, and the building was originally two storeys with a crown post roof dating from the early to mid-16th century. The interior has wide oak floorboards and was refitted during the periods indicated by the two date stones, with several 19th-century fire surrounds. The original hall range had its upper storey raised during the 17th century, at which time the south wing appears to have been added.
