Description
The Chelmsford Institute, built in 1841, is a two-storey building made of gault brick with stone trim. It features a three-bay front with a pedimented gable and a one-bay side return. The front is adorned with four giant order pilasters that have Egyptian capitals. The central first-floor window and the top windows on the north return are pedimented and supported by consoles between the giant pilasters. The other windows have architraves, mullions, sills, and flat hoods on consoles, each consisting of three pairs of two-pane sashes with marginal lights. The central front door is set in an Egyptian stone surround and is flanked by two windows. The building has a rectangular plan and a slated roof that runs east to west. The side walls feature round-headed sash windows on the first floor, positioned above plain rectangular ground floor windows. A chimney is located over the party vaults.
