Description

The Regent Theatre is a cinema built in 1915 by architect F Burdett Ward. The foyer was altered in 1935 by A E Wiseman, and it was converted into a bingo and social club in the mid-1970s. The building features brick construction with a plastered front and slate roofs. The auditorium is circular in plan, with a balcony and boxes, a stage and fly tower located to the southeast, and deep entrance foyers that include a manager's office and operator's room above.

The theatre is designed in the Rococo style, with a two-storey, three-bay plastered front. The wide central bay has a recessed entrance on the ground floor with a 20th-century fascia. The narrow flanking bays have curved open pediments and modillion cornices above, with a wide recessed balcony at the centre featuring a heavy balustrade. The flanking bays are rusticated and have composite pilasters, festoons above round arch windows, and entablatures with egg-and-dart mouldings on the cornices. The central segmental pediment has been removed, leaving only the tympanum decoration, which features an oval with plumes below and festoons and swags above, all set within a high stepped parapet.

At the rear of the building, there are small round windows in both the auditorium and the fly tower. The interior is richly decorated with Rococo-style plasterwork, including the auditorium ceiling and walls, balcony front and soffit, boxes, and proscenium arch. Similar plasterwork is found in the foyers, and the stairs leading to the balcony foyer, rebuilt in 1935, feature a wrought iron balustrade. The seating in the auditorium has been removed.
