Description
Spencers is a house that was formerly a house and shop, dating from the early 14th century, with later alterations including a roof raise. It is constructed from timber framing and is roughly rendered, topped with a red plain tiled roof and featuring a central red brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a central pentice board. The front has two vertically sliding sash windows with horns, set in moulded surrounds. On the ground floor to the left, there is a 19th-century flat-headed shop bay with small paned glazing and a louvre underneath, along with two vertically boarded doors. Notable original features include a crown post roof, a jettied first floor ceiling that has been underbuilt, a brick fireplace, and a bridging joist that has been reused. The building originally had a 12th-century top plate with lap dovetails and housed entrant shoulders. The east wall has wattles held with withy ties, and there are 18th-century details on the doors and windows.
