Description
Kalon Shepherd's Cottage, located on Shepherd's Place, is a house that has been divided into three cottages. It dates from the 16th century or earlier and underwent alterations in the 17th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. It features a three-bay hall range facing east and a two-bay crosswing to the left. There is a late 16th-century axial stack at the junction of these sections, along with a 19th-century external stack on the right return wall.
At the back of the hall range, there is a two-storey extension from the 19th or 20th century with a slate roof, and a single-storey extension with a hipped roof behind the crosswing. The building stands two storeys high. The crosswing, known as Kalon, has an underbuilt jetty and a one-window range of 20th-century casements, with the entrance located in the left return wall. The middle section, Shepherd's Place, features one 20th-century bow window, a 20th-century casement on the first floor, and a 20th-century lean-to porch with a door on the right side. Shepherd's Cottage, the right end, has a one-window range of early 19th-century sashes with 16 lights and a four-panel door topped with a shallow hood on scrolled brackets.
The hall range was raised approximately 1.5 metres in the 17th century, with some smoke-blackened rafters being reused in the clasped purlin roof. Additionally, Shepherd's Place has a bread oven located at the rear of the main hearth.
