Description

This building, part of the Co-operative Supermarket, consists of houses numbered 31, 33, and 35 on the north side of High Street in Earls Colne. It dates from the late 14th century and early 16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed, with sections clad in red brick laid in Flemish bond and other areas plastered. The roof is covered with handmade red plain tiles.

The right bay retains the remains of a 14th-century open hall, while the left part, which has a higher roof, is from the early 16th century and features a cartway in the left bay and a long-wall jetty that is underbuilt. The building has two storeys, with the ground floor displaying three 20th-century bow shop windows. On the first floor, there is one 19th-century casement window, one 20th-century casement window, and one late 19th-century sash window with four lights. There is no door present. Much of the timber frame is exposed internally on the first floor, and the building has a crownpost roof.
