Description
The Cooperative Supermarket, originally a house, dates from the late 15th century and was extended in 1887, with further alterations in the 20th century. It features a timber frame, primarily clad with gault brick in Flemish bond, and partly plastered, with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The 1887 extension is constructed from yellow stock bricks. The building is L-shaped with a gabled design and has a long jetty that is underbuilt, facing the street, along with a parallel range added to the right in 1887. There is a single-storey extension at the rear, which is roofed with 20th-century red pantiles. The building stands two storeys tall, with a full-length 20th-century shopfront on the ground floor. The first floor features four late 19th-century sash windows with 12 lights each. A stone plaque on the right gable displays a beehive in a roundel and the date 1887. Inside, the original timber frame is largely intact above the ground-floor window heads, showcasing ornately moulded beams and joists, original door and window openings, arched wall bracing, cambered tiebeams, and a crownpost roof. Documentary evidence indicates the building's history dates back to 1468.
