Description

This is a mid-15th century house, later extended and altered, now occupied as a Spar Foodmarket. It is located on the north side of High Street, Earls Colne. The building is timber-framed and originally plastered, with the timber framing visible on the front first floor. The roof is covered in handmade red plain tiles. The original front range dates to the mid-15th century, with a further commercial range added in the 16th century to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The building is two storeys high. The ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront. The first floor features three 19th-century sash windows with small side windows. The timber frame has curved bracing on the exterior studs. Two original windows on the first floor front are now blocked. Interior features include stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, arched-braced tiebeams, and a crownpost roof. Documentary evidence suggests that the rear range was built as weaving premises in 1566.
