Description

Norman Funnell, Butcher is a shop and house located on the north side of The Square in Lenham. It dates from the early 16th century, with a mid-to-late 16th century wing and a mid-19th century addition. The building features a timber frame with an early 19th century red brick front in Flemish bond, topped with a dentilled eaves cornice. The right gable is hung with fishscale tiles, and the roof is covered with plain tiles. The structure is Wealden in style, consisting of three bays: a storeyed right end, an open central bay, and either an open or storeyed left end bay.

There is a single bay rear wing that is recessed from the right side elevation of the front range, with a mid-19th century two-storey addition at the end of it. The building has two storeys and features a rear brick stack at the junction between the main range and the wing. The fenestration is irregular, with three windows: a tall two-light casement on the right, a tripartite sash in the centre, and a sash without glazing bars on the left. The early 20th century flat-roofed rectangular shop front projects from the right end and includes a low decorative iron balcony and a plain door. There is a 20th century half-glazed door at the left end of the elevation.

The rear wing is timber-framed and has a lean-to on the right side, which contains a door with a glazed panel. The 19th century addition is made of chequered red and grey brick with a plain tile roof, also two storeys high, with a half-hipped roof to the rear and one glazing-bar sash on each floor. Inside, there is a four-light diamond mullion window in the wing, a first-floor fireplace with a chamfered lintel, and exposed timbers throughout.
