Description
The Lock-Up or Mortuary is an early 18th-century mortuary building, later used as a lock-up and now a store. Constructed of coursed stone with a plain tile roof, it stands at a right angle to the road, with its north side wall forming part of the ground-floor rear wall of the adjacent Douglas Almshouses. The building is single-storied and sits upon a moulded plinth, now level with the ground. A projecting stone band, approximately 3 feet 6 inches from the ground, runs around the structure, with a slight cant to the wall between the band and the plinth. A tall recessed door is set into the street-facing facade, featuring a semi-circular stone head supported by fluted impost bands. The doorway is topped by a heavy, projecting arch of rusticated stone voussoirs, with large keystones that rise into the base of a triangular pediment. The pediment is finished with projecting stone coping and surmounted by a squat stone cross. A wooden double door is located on the left end of the left side elevation. The building is associated with an early 18th-century workhouse that stood on the site and has since been demolished. It is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
