Description

Gravel House is a house that has been converted into flats. It mainly dates from the 18th century, though it may have earlier origins, and was altered in the mid-19th century. The building is plastered and has a slate roof. It has an approximately rectangular plan facing south, with the front forming a slight obtuse angle. There is one chimney stack on the left return and another at the rear right, which is enclosed by a full-width catslide extension. There is also a two-storey wing added to the rear right, featuring an end stack, and a small single-storey lean-to extension in the rear left corner.

The house has three storeys and features two two-storey splayed bays with mid-19th century sash windows that have marginal lights. Above the central door, there is one mid-19th century sash window with marginal lights, and three similar sashes on the second floor. The central entrance has a six-panel door, with the bottom panels being fielded and the upper panels moulded, flanked by plain sidelights. This door is set within a doorcase that has four pilasters with cable carving, scrolled brackets with foliate carving, and an extended segmental head, all dating from the mid-19th century. A large stone step leads up to the entrance. The front elevation is symmetrical, except for the noted angle, suggesting that there may have been an earlier structure.

On the left return, there is one similar sash window on each floor. The right return of the rear wing also has one similar sash window on each floor, and there is an additional sash window on the first floor of the rear elevation of the main range near the right end. The interior has not been inspected.
