Description
Nos. 6 and 8 West Street is a house that has been divided into two separate homes. It dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The main section faces south and has two rear stacks, along with a wing at the rear left. There is a 19th-century two-storey extension made of red brick with an external stack at the end. To the right of the main range, there is a single-storey lean-to extension with a corrugated iron roof, as well as a 20th-century two-storey extension behind it that has a flat roof, and a further single-storey extension beyond that.
The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a five-window range of 18th-century sash windows with 12 lights, some of which have crown glass. The central entrance has an eight-panel door, with six fielded panels and two glazed panels, set in a doorcase with panelled jambs and soffit, rusticated pilasters, a triglyph frieze with four bronze medallions, and a moulded pediment topped with a winged bronze ornament. There are two stone steps leading up to the door. A plain band runs along the first-floor level, and there is a moulded wooden cornice that extends around both returns, topped with a plywood parapet and a hipped roof.
No. 8 includes the left ground-floor room and the left rear wing, while No. 6 comprises the remainder of the building. The right side of the left rear wing has painted brick on the ground floor and is plastered above. There is one 19th-century sash window with 10+10 lights and another with 6+6 lights, along with a plain boarded door on the right side of the brick extension. The central entrance hall has been partially blocked with a four-panel door and a plain overlight of three lights. Other internal doors are six-panel. The ground-floor rooms and hall feature boxed axial beams, and there is a 20th-century grate in the right room, while the other room was not inspected. The first-floor rooms also have boxed axial beams, with boxed transverse beams visible over the right room but not over the left. A two-panel pine door leads to the original attic stair, and the attics have original hardwood floorboards. It is reported that only the frames of the ground-floor front windows have been renewed.
