Description

No. 10 West Street is a house that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The original 17th-century section is a three-bay range positioned at right angles to the street, featuring two stacks in the right wall. An 18th-century extension on the left completes an approximately square layout, with an internal stack located on the right side of the rear part.

The 18th-century roof spans a wide vehicle way to the left at eaves height. A 20th-century two-storey extension with a flat roof is located at the rear right, along with single-storey extensions beyond. The house stands two storeys tall and has two 20th-century metal casements on each floor. A 20th-century half-glazed door is set in a recessed porch at the left corner, featuring a plain overlight, an early 19th-century reeded architrave, and a moulded soffit canopy. The building has a plain parapet and a hipped double-range roof.

Above the vehicle way, the roof features a weatherboarded gable at the front, while at the rear, it connects seamlessly with the rear range of the house and is hipped. The rear also has 20th-century metal casements. Inside, there is an early 19th-century dogleg stair with turned newels, moulded rails, and stick balusters. Each side of the front hearth has an alcove with a semi-elliptical arch and a 20th-century grate. The interior features a chamfered beam and plain joists of vertical section, mostly plastered to the soffits. The earlier range has a clasped purlin roof that is ceiled to the collars, and the frame is mainly concealed by plaster. Over the vehicle way, there are four transverse beams, with the inner two being chamfered, and the flooring consists of chipboard.
