Description
Mill Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 16th century, with extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in machine-made clay tiles. The building consists of four bays aligned approximately east to west, featuring a chimney stack in the second bay from the west end, which creates a lobby entrance and stair hall to the north. The house was extended to the east and west in the 19th and 20th centuries, and there is an external chimney stack at the east end.
The farmhouse has two storeys, with a four-panel door that has glazed upper panels, situated in a slated gabled porch. On the ground floor, there are three 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor features two 19th-century and two 20th-century casement windows. Inside, the structure includes jowled posts, curved bracing set within heavy studding, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, plain-chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, and exposed joists of horizontal section.
Between the main chimney stack and the front door, there is an original newel stair that rises to the attic floor, which is currently unlit. The upper part of the front wall contains an unglazed window with four diamond mullions that is blocked externally. Historical drawings in the owner's possession indicate that the roof was originally thatched before being tiled around 1956.
